We received the following press release this morning, 1 April 2013. Surely another April Fool’s day prank? Then again, “joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance”.

Jobs case for Link Road was “oversold” – Council Leader
1 April 2013: The economic case for the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road has been “oversold”, the outgoing leader of East Sussex County Council (ESCC), Peter Jones CBE, will tell a meeting of the Hastings and Rye Conservative Association this Thursday (4th April).
While he remains a strong advocate for the Road, Mr Jones says that some of his previous claims concerning the potential benefits of the scheme were mistaken.
Cllr Jones said: “I still think the Link Road should be built, but I have to admit that the Department for Transport is right when it says that ESCC has significantly overstated the benefits of the project. In particular, I was wrong to state that the Road will create 3,000 jobs. The DfT’s figure of 1,000 jobs – barely half of them local – is much more likely. Though the DfT has assessed that the Road may well represent low value for money the County Council have other good reasons for pressing ahead.”
Cllr Jones will also take the opportunity to hit out against local opponents of the Road. “Rumours that I intend to move from my house on the Ridge to a second home in Fairlight are entirely unfounded,” he explained. “I am here to stay and am confident that the predicted 26% increase in traffic on the Ridge as a result of the Link Road will be barely noticeable.”
