Documenting the destruction of Hollington Valley

Hollington Valley, 14 March 2016

Here’s what happens if you try to document the destruction of our green spaces.  First, you’re told you’re not allowed to stand on a public footpath. Then when you continue to do so, you’re surrounded by a crowd of anonymous, unbadged, face-hiding, quite possibly untrained security guards, who attempt to push you off the path.

When you resist, one of them steals your phone. When the police are called, they tell you it’s not an offence as there was no intention to deprive you of it permanently. When you continue to try to take photographs, security guards block your camera with their hands and try to push you across the road. They say that if you don’t move, they’ll call the police.  Go ahead, you say, call the police, please do. They don’t.

This is the reality of ‘regeneration’ in our town: hired heavies trying to stop local residents lawfully documenting the destruction of their green spaces. As with SeaChange itself, there is no accountability, no transparency. They do what they want, and they get away with it. For how much longer?
